Lieutenant is a rank of the Canadian Forces. As with the rank of Captain (Canada), the naval rank is superior to the Land/Air rank.
A naval Lieutenant is equivalent to ranks with a NATO code of OF-2,[1] whereas land/air Lieutenants are equivalent to ranks with a NATO code of OF-1.[2]
The rank insignia of a naval lieutenant is two wide bars. The rank insignia of a land/air lieutenant is one wide bar with a narrow bar above it. On dress uniforms, the bars are gold thread. On CADPAT and flying uniforms, the bars are olive drab on Army slip-ons, dark blue on Air Force slip-ons, and black on Navy slip-ons.
The British pronunciation "lef-tenant" is used by many, but the American (or original French) pronunciation of "loo-tenant" is sometimes heard.
